HB1059/SB1724 Check the status of this legislation by using this link. 2/28/07: I've spoken with Rep. Delores Gresham this afternoon and explained to her that my concern is how this legislation may impact homeschoolers. Specifically this legislation says "curriculum approved by the state board of education" and is different from courses required "for admission to a four-year public college" which is what is enumerated in the Tennessee Code for homeschooling. My concern is that someone could take this wording and require specific approved curriculum instead of courses. She understood my concern and didn't realize that this could be a problem and is very willing to hear comments from homeschoolers and reword the legislation. Her goal is to help ensure that students getting the lottery scholarship are fully prepared for success in college. So you are hereby encouraged to write Rep. Delores Gresham and Sen. Bill Ketron with you comments regarding the wording of this legislation. You can use this link to e-mail them both. 2/14/07: legislation introduced by Rep. Delores Gresham and Sen. Bill Ketron and referred to each respective Education Committees which defines "college core curriculum" for lottery scholarship eligibility. Summary: In context: (Unlike many other states Tennessee doesn't show you the legislative changes in context and so we provide it below. Strikethrough means the text will be eliminated and bold text will be added.) The following will be added to each of the following sections: TCA 49-4-907, 49-4-908, and 49-4-920 as an appropriate subsection. In order to be eligible for a Tennessee HOPE scholarship to attend an eligible four-year post-secondary institution, successfully complete the college core curriculum in high school. For purposes of this subsection, "college core curriculum" means the high school courses in the curriculum approved by the state board of education for those students intending to pursue postsecondary education; |
